Long ago I was a contractor at the n ational headquarters for a big insurance c ompany, and there was a nesting pair who set up shop each spring right outside the front door to our building. I’d keep an eye out for frightened visitors and go escort them in, since I knew the geese were more bark than bite.

There was quite an assemblage of them in the area; at one point we captured one with a broken wing for a local rescue organization to look at, but it couldn’t be saved.

Not that anyone was really heartbroken that a Canada goose died, but it did look very pathetic out there.

I don’t believe in hitting animals, but I make an exception of geese. We had a few when I was growing up and they were the meanest, nastiest things. I’d smack them in the head in defense and the little bastards would just come back for more!

We thought we’d have a traditional goose dinner for Christmas and slaughtered them. But even in death they got their revenge, being stringy and simultaneously greasy and dry and basically inedible. As a result, t here was no main course at dinner that year...
